How to use this website

The entries are listed alphabetically by the season in which you will find the best selection and price for that particular fruit or vegetable. Not all varieties of a specific item will be available during that season. When that is the case, we have made a note of it under the heading "Peak of the season."

Some fruits and vegetables, either because they grow all year (like mushrooms), because they store extremely well (like onions), or they come from tropical countries (like bananas), cannot be classified by season. You will find them listed in the "Year Round" selection of this website.

In the 'Your Produce' menu of this website, you will find fruits and vegetables listed by season or under the "Year Round" heading. They are in alphabetical order. In the 'Table of Contents' of this website, the fruits and vegetables are listed alphabetically, each followed by its season and type of produce such as fruit or vegetable. Use the search page to look up the specific variety of fruit or vegetable that you have in mind. For example, there are many varieties of apple. You can look up the Red Delicious apples by typing "Red Delicious" in one of the search boxes. To narrow down the search you can click the "Exact Phrase" check box to find only the "Red Delicious" sequence of words.  Also if you are looking for a specific fruit you can narrow down the search by clicking the "Search only: Titles" option.  This will search only the titles of the produce articles and will not search the article content and find a bunch of permutations of the word you are searching for. Using the various Search optioins should make it easier to find the specific variety of a fruit or vegetable that you are looking for.

Under each entry are four headings:

How to select the best flavor:

The best method for picking fresh, ripe produce is described. You will find out about what things to look for or to avoid when choosing fresh produce, as well as some common fallacies many people still have.

Peak of the season:

Many fruits and vegetables are available over a long season but are available with greater selection and better price during certain months. You are also given an idea where most of the crop will be coming from at particular times of the year.

Nutritional value:

Most of the information in this section was compiled from the USDA reports on the nutritional quality of food. You are informed as to which nutrients a particular item is rich in. To meet the needs of special diets, I have carefully listed the calorie, fat, sodium content of each item. If you eat a wide variety of fruits and vegetables and choose the ones most in season, you will be getting the balance of nutrients needed for your overall health.

General information:

This can be anything from storage tips to historical information. I have done my best to provide interesting, fun and useful information. Items that have many varieties, like potatoes, will be listed in this section.
